Artisanat marocain

The south of Morocco is home to large palm groves, where the use of straw has always been rooted in the local culture. Basketweaving is the oldest craft of Morocco and was originally performed only by men.

Today, women have also become experts in the field and the art of basketry has continued to grow. Like all Moroccan crafts, basketry forms differ from one region to another. Grouped into cooperatives or associations, the craftswomen work together and sell their products in major cities like Marrakech, Fez and Rabat.

The palm fronds utilized in the process of basket weaving must be cut regularly for the palms to grow. They are recycled in order to create these baskets, and so the craft is involved in the growth of the tree and is part of a sustainable development and ecology.

Worship side

The traditional Moroccan basket, used since the dawn of time in North Africa and the Mediterranean markets. Ideal for your shopping and a perfect Moses basket for your precious bundle.

This basket is made of palm leaves, has 2 long and 2 short leather straps, so you can carry it on your shoulder or hold it by the hand very comfortably. It is light and great for storage, ecological and ethical, pretty, all in all an indispensable accessory. Moroccan basketwork, renowned for being strong and pliable is a craft that has spread throughout the whole Mediterranean region.

From the market to the beach is an easy step, the large basket will hold all your beach essentials including a very large beach towel. And from the beach to town is another natural transition for this basket, if you wish to prolong that holiday feel and stay cool and elegant.

During the 30s, wicker and palm leaves were used in ladies’ handbags, peaking in the 50s among the haute couture crowd, but young urban girls were already wearing a crude version in the US and Paris. The Moroccan basket remains an essential summer accessory, whether you are in Italy, Provence or the Balearic Isles, and no one in their right mind would choose anything else for their holidays.

Rock stars, ‘60s idols, English girls in “One Year in Provence”, flower girls and overworked mums… all one day or other will choose the RIGHT carrier, the one in DOUM, the one their mother or grand-mother used to have, just for the magic of this shopping basket: the feeling of stepping out of modern living, a flashback to Proust’s madeleines, or in this case a scent of Monoi and basil… and maybe the echo of a deep psychedelic riff somewhere…
