Artisanat marocain

The south of Morocco is home to large palm groves, where the use of straw has always been rooted in the local culture. Basketweaving is the oldest craft of Morocco and was originally performed only by men.

Today, women have also become experts in the field and the art of basketry has continued to grow. Like all Moroccan crafts, basketry forms differ from one region to another. Grouped into cooperatives or associations, the craftswomen work together and sell their products in major cities like Marrakech, Fez and Rabat.

The palm fronds utilized in the process of basket weaving must be cut regularly for the palms to grow. They are recycled in order to create these baskets, and so the craft is involved in the growth of the tree and is part of a sustainable development and ecology.

Worship side

The traditional Moroccan basket has been used in Maghreb since the dawn of time to fill with fruits and vegetables and it made its way to Mediterranean markets a very long time ago. It is, in fact, the ideal shopping bag.

This large basket made of palm leaves comes with 2 long and 2 short straps, so that you can carry it on your shoulder or hold it in hand very comfortably. Moroccan basketwork is renowned for their solid yet supple quality; these baskets are light, great for storage, ecological, ethical AND pretty, all in all an indispensable accessory.

From the market to the beach is an easy step, the large basket will hold all your beach essentials including a very large beach towel. And from the beach to town is another natural transition for this basket, if you wish to prolong that holiday feel and stay cool and elegant.

Actually, the straw basket has been used as a ladies’ handbag for quite some time with its peak in the 50’s as it was embraced by the haute couture. However, young urban girls had already adopted it in its original, “raw” version in the US and Paris. Today, the Moroccan basket remains an essential summer accessory, whether you are in Italy, Provence or the Balearic Isles, and no one in their right mind would choose anything else for their holidays.

Rock stars, 60’s idols, English girls with their gap years in Provence, bohemians and hardworking moms… All of them will, one day or another, adopt the RIGHT basket, the one in palm leaves, the one their mother or grandmother used to have, just for the magic pleasure that this shopping bag conveys : the feeling of stepping out of modern life, a Proust madeleine of the South, and in this case a scent of Monoi and basil… And maybe the echo of a psychedelic guitar beat somewhere…
